It is understandable why the game of cornhole has grown more popular over the past few years. It is a simple game that can be enjoyed by any age-group and the game rules are pretty simple to follow. There are some who have played this game who decide that they can actually make their own set. All that is needed is a board (or two boards) and 4 or 8 corn toss bags. Not everyone prefers to do this but the handful that do make the bags and other accessories actually enjoy the benefits of crafting them. The construction of corn toss bags requires one to have basic sewing skills. It doesn’t matter whether you would sew manually or if you prefer to use a sewing machine. The objective is to be able to stitch durably so that the corn kernels aren’t scattered all over the ground during the cornhole game. Having a basic sewing skill isn’t the only concern, though. You must know which durable fabric to use, what thread to purchase, and what fillings are best used. When it comes to the cloth, the most common choice is duck canvas. This is a lightweight yet highly durable fabric which is also commonly called cotton duck or duck cloth.
Most fabric manufacturers grade their cotton duck with a standard numbering system. The lightest fabric for duck canvas is graded 10 while the thickest is graded 1. You would want to purchase a duck canvas with grade 10 rather than the grade 1 fabrics. Heavier duck canvas is used for making shoes and upholstered furniture so it’s better to settle for the lightweight type.
Any durable fabric can be used as corn toss bag material. Cotton and polyester are also widely used. Cotton is soft to the touch while polyester has a durable weave so they’re both perfect for the game of cornhole. When both materials are combined in a cotton polyester blend, what is produced is a water-proof fabric which can withstand any wet weather.
Make sure also that the cloth you choose is not easily chewed on by critters or torn apart by small animals. Just cut the fabric into 6″ by 6″ squares (sixteen pieces is the maximum number or you could also do eight). The next step is to sew two squares together by double stitching the three sides with 0.5″ seams, leaving open only the fourth side. This opening is where you would pour in 2 cups full of dried corn kernels (you could also use plastic pellets or dried beans). Just make sure that all stitches on all four sides are tightly closed. The last thing you need are corn kernels flying everywhere in the middle of your cornhole game.
When it comes to choosing the colors for your corn toss bags, it’s really just up to you. With two, opposing teams vying to win the needed 21 points, you can invest in just two different colors for all your eight bags, or you can just make each bag a unique color.
