Liverpool have made a move to sign Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window as they seek to overtake Manchester United in the race for the Dutch winger, according to Paul Joyce of The Times. The talks between the Merseysiders and PSV Eindhoven are apparently progressing fast, and if all goes well, the medical preceding the move could take place within the next 48 hours.

Liverpool’s seemingly sudden determination to sign the Netherlands international stems from the injury absences of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, both of whom are expected to remain out of action a while yet.

Gakpo usually plays on the left attacking flank, and his pace and creativity is likely to be of great value for Jurgen Klopp’s team. The 23-year-old has so far played 24 matches in all competitions for PSV this season, scoring 13 goals and producing 17 assists.

Liverpool are expected to pay an initial fee of £37 million for Gakpo.
